The Wallasey School Wins Basic Skills Award Again

In 1997 Wallasey School decided to apply for recognition of the high quality curriculum on offer to pupils and in particular, the provision for pupils with basic skills needs. Having been successful we now have to apply for re-assessment every three years, in order to continue to hold the Quality Mark.

So in December three assessors came into school for two days each, to have a look at what was going on.

WHAT WERE THEY LOOKING FOR?

There are ten elements which the school has to demonstrate

1. Whole school strategy and action plan to improve performance in basic skills

2. Objective assessment of pupil performance in basic skills

3. Targets for continuous improvement

4. Individual basic skills improvement plans for pupils receiving help

5. Regular review of progress by pupils

6. Access to nationally recognised accreditation (qualifications)

7. Access to training for teaching staff and Teaching Assistants

8. Appropriate teaching styles, learning approaches and materials

9. Involvement of parents

10. Effective monitoring and assessing improvements in performance in basic skills

On a re-assessment we have to show that there has been continuous improvement during the previous three years. Following a rigorous assessment programme we were pleased to learn that the assessors had been extremely impressed - again. Not only that but we are one of only 20 schools across the country to have gained this remarkable award and the only Secondary school in Wirral.

AND THIS IS WHAT THEY SAID

In particular the assessors praised the clear philosophy o the school which is focussed upon positively supporting the basic skills of all its pupils.

1. Well targeted extensive resources

2. Well established tracking systems which continue throughout all years to ascertain impact on value added measures

3. Parents were grateful that the school made strenuous efforts to inform them and involve them in their children’s learning

4. Discussion with students left a lasting impression on the accreditation team. It was clear that their views and perceptions were valued and influenced strategic planning

5. Well informed Governors are truly critical friends and keen to exercise their responsibility in supporting the school

6. Support Staff are highly valued and students receive the best possible intervention and support

The Basic Skills Agency reported it was a delight to conduct the renewal accreditation and warmly congratulated the school and its wider community The plaque has arrived and proudly displays the five ticks, which represents the twelve years we have held the award. What an achievement! Our thanks go to all the staff and pupils for their hard work which has enabled us to retain the Quality Mark again. Here’s to the next three years!
