On Saturday 30th January 12 schools from across Wirral competed against each other at the University of Liverpool in the Aimhigher Science Olympics competition.
The students took part in a series of events that tested their science knowledge, team working and communication skills at the Department of Physics in the University of Liverpool. They worked extremely hard to try to achieve the highest scores on the day and to go through to the grand finals later in the year.
The team from Wallasey School consisting of Mitchell Lamb-Davies, Matthew Clitheroe, Conall Winship and Josh Amis, triumphed on the day and will be competing in the final with teams from all over Greater Merseyside for the Science Olympics title this summer.
David Painter, organiser of the Aimhigher Science Olympics and a physics graduate from The University of Liverpool explains: (Aim Higher Greater Merseyside website) "The day is aimed to help students learn and develop skills in a fun and interesting way. The competition is a way of making science more accessible. We hope that activities such as these will begin to spark an interest in science and inspire the pupils to study the subject at university."
Headteacher, Philip Duffy, expressed his delight at the outcome thanking the LA and theUniversity for helping create the conditions that allows talented students to achieve success. “Our students always rise to the challenge when asked and this, added to our many recent achievements, is further evidence that Wallasey School students are ‘Aiming High’”.
